Ladies and Gentlemen, let’s dive even deeper into what makes Steampunk and Cyberpunk so different, yet surprisingly connected to each other!

Also, we’re going to explore why they’re such fascinating and cool genres on their own, right? It’s simply mesmerizing how the century-related basic technology and equipment and its attachment to clothing can create and at the same time separate the 2 lifestyles in a blink!;)

Cause let’s face it, at their core, steampunk, and cyberpunk are two wildly distinct visions of alternative realities, but they share a common thread: both imagine worlds that are shaped by technology. The difference lies in the kind of technology they’re mainly focused on, the time period they draw inspiration from, and the total vibe they give off in the end!

Mean…for an ageless beauty enthusiast or a leather, gear, and functional clothing fan, it’s an ocean of millions of possibilities. Goes for both Steampunk and Cyberpunk!;) So what exactly is the difference?

Alright…let’s start with the Origin of Cyberpunk and its influences?

Cyberpunk

Everything really started kicking off in the 1980s, but its roots go back a bit further. Thing is… the late 20th century was a time when technology was booming and computers were getting smarter, also corporations were growing bigger, and people were starting to ask, “What happens if tech takes over our lives?”

People around 50 most definitely remember the phase when the world with its industries started introducing the new “game plan” step-by-step, right? Now, the actual term “cyberpunk” was coined by a writer named Bruce Bethke in a short story he wrote in 1983. However, the big bang for the genre came with William Gibson’s novel, “Neuromancer” (1984) That book was literally it!!

It basically introduced the concept of cyberspace, read it as a virtual world where people could just “plug themselves into”. So he painted this gritty, neon-soaked future where hackers, corporations, and AI were all coexisting. It wasn’t just sci-fi anymore; it felt edgy, rebellious, and way too close to home…way more than ever before. Cause we already knew and got the idea of the world moving in THAT direction anyway!;)

Before that, though…the seeds being planted in earlier works as well. Think Philip K. Dick’s “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” (the book that inspired Blade Runner)…It had the same exact cyberpunk aura: dystopian future, advanced tech, and a whole lot of existential questions about humanity and machines.

Then of course Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner(1982) came out…probably the most ICONIC cyber movie ever made. That dark, rainy, neon-filled city look really helped cement the feel of the genre!;) Not even the last man standing on the list i would like to categorize to the group would be “Star Wars” all time movie series…not fully following the same standard, but it has the similar nuances that’s been taking the subculture where it is right now!;)

So, yeah, cyberpunk officially took off in the ’80s as this response to the rapid growth of tech, corporate power, and people’s growing fears (and also HOPES!) about the future. Like a little glimpse of where we could be heading, at the same time terrifying as hell, man!

Since then, it’s evolved, with stories like Ghost in the Shell, The Matrix, and let’s not forget anime classics like “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners(2022)” and “Ghost in the Shell(1995)” are practically the holy grail of the genre’s storytelling!;)

Cyberpunk in comics?

Oh, it’s a thing! I’m telling you…comics and graphic novels let artists go all out with the visuals, so you get these insane cyber landscapes that would cost a billion dollars to make in a movie of course! That being said, it fits so well because comics are all about big visuals, and cyberpunk loves showing off neon cities, cool tech, and kick-ass characters. Cause we can’t get enough of them, right?;)

Take “Transmetropolitan (1997-2002)”, for example. It’s all about a rogue journalist in a messed-up futuristic world with wild tech and corrupt systems. Or you might like “Hard Boiled(1990)”, which is a super-violent, hyper-detailed story about a guy who might be an AI. It’s got crazy action, and cyberpunk is obsessed with that whole “machines vs. humanity” theme.

Newest releases?

Dark Horse Comics has been actively expanding the Cyberpunk 2077 universe with new comic series. One of the latest additions is “Cyberpunk 2077: Psycho Squad,” announced in October 2024 and another recent release is “Cyberpunk 2077: Kickdown,” a four-issue miniseries that debuted on July 3, 2024.

These two are basically THE series that continue to enrich the Cyberpunk 2077 narrative, offering fans deeper insights into the dystopian world of Night City!;)

Looking for games to play?

Let me tell you this…Cyberpunk and video games are a match made in heaven. An enormous amount(most) of the games right now let you engage with your character enough to bring some cyber elements to it. Without a doubt! One of the big ones, obviously, is “Cyberpunk 2077”.

It’s literally named after the genre and lets you customize your character with all kinds of cybernetic implants while running around in this massive, futuristic city. Sure, it had a rocky launch, but people just love it for the sheer vibe of being in a cyberpunk world!

Other games like “Deus Ex”, “Shadowrun”, and even “The Matrix” video games bring those same themes of tech, rebellion, and dystopia to life. Even in smaller indie games like “Ruiner” or “Cloudpunk”, you can feel the “touching love” for the global style!

Plus, all these 3 feed off each other. Cyberpunk anime inspires video games (hello…Edgerunners and Cyberpunk 2077), games inspire comics, and so on. It’s like this big, creative feedback loop that keeps the genre alive and evolving.

In a nutshell…Cyberpunk is not just a genre anymore, it’s a whole “lifestyle for us now” apparently! It caught us quicker before we even realized it!;) Because let’s face the fact, we’re all full of questions about what it means to be human in a tech-driven world in 2025!

So what about the style?

Cyberpunk look in one word is simply “badass” because it’s both a fashion and a mood. The main thing that screams out is its futuristics of course, but it’s also grounded in the here and now, pulling from streetwear and tech trends we already see creeping into our real life!

Plus, it has a total DIY vibe to it…like, you can slap some glowing wires on a cropped jacket or a futuristic trench coat and pair it with combat boots, and boom…you’re channeling cyberpunk energy already!;) Or you can go by just wearing a bodysuit with glowing lines, or gear that looks half functional, half fashion statement…so to say!

Speaking of colors, the base note of the outfit should mainly consist of darker tones like black, grey, and deep blues…combined with pops of neon—electric greens, blues, purples, and pinks as extras!
And let’s not forget about the accessories, people! Cybernetic implants, LED glasses, jewelry with metallic finishing touches, or even wires and circuits integrated into clothing and even the hair, is exactly what Cyberpunk is all about!;)

Steampunk

Putting Steampunk and Cyberpunk face to face…these two are wildly distinct visions of alternative realities, but they share a common thread, cause they both imagine worlds that are shaped by technology over time!

The difference lies in the kind of technology they focus on, the time period they draw inspiration from, and the vibe they give off! Compared to Cyberpunk, Steampunk is more optimistic and reminds us of the beauty of invention and the power of human creativity than the darker technological advancement. Its main focus is on exploration, adventure, and the thrill of discovery.

Basically, everything that a human hand can solve to improve the world…linguistically speaking! Cause let me bring you back to the earth…in the world right now, it’s almost impossible to get away without the smallest touch of technology.

That being said…it’s all about the imagination basically, my friends! Cmon…detailed clockwork mechanisms, goggles as glasses, and all that handcrafted charm..It’s not that functional anymore, yet it’s beautiful! And that’s probably the biggest difference compared to Cyberpunk I can personally bring out, and what made me fall in love with Steampunk in the first place!;)

Especially when you have that Victorian influence brought in everywhere, from corsets and tailcoats to a variety of hats and heeled boots. Even the tech has a romanticized and magical quality I have to say…being wildly impractical but “glorious” to look at!;)

When did Steampunk start and what role does it play in entertainment?

Let’s have a throwback to the late 1800s, when writers like Jules Verne and H.G Wells were just doing their thing, by releasing books about futuristic tech like submarines and time machines, but with the industrial revolution’s aesthetic. Their stories weren’t that steampunk yet, but they laid the groundwork for sure!:)

A century later…Steampunk as a genre really started to take a shape that is more known nowadays. Thanks to a group of modern authors (they were totally inspired by Verne and Wells) who decided to mix Victorian vibe with sci-fi ideas, to test it out!

So K.W. Jeter, who’s often credited with labeling the term “Steampunk,” was making jokes about it in a letter to a Sci-Fi magazine, by saying it described books like his “Morlock Night” and Tim Powers’ “The Anubis Gates”! So they weren’t even serious about trying to invent a new genre or anything…it just kind of stuck all of a sudden!;)

Once people got their nose to it, steampunk literally exploded and beyond just books! It became this entirely new aesthetic with adventurous gears, hats, goggles, corsets, pocket watches, walking sticks, chains, and ALL those steam-powered contraptions absolutely everywhere! It was basically an uncharted territory…so what’s not to love there, right?;)

Here is my post about how far-reaching Steampunk really is in Movies, Tv-Shows, and Anime!;)

So yeah…we should take Steampunk as a playful experiment…by blending industrial-era vibes with futuristic desires. It’s remarkable that it started with books but grew into something enormous like movies, games, fashion, and anime! No need to mention these DIY communities where people build their own steampunk gadgets. Btw, the same goes for cyberpunk as well!;)

Looking for some Steampunk inspiration out of games?

Each one of these games taps into Steampunk in its own special way…whether it’s the gritty industrial vibes, over-the-top tech, or some clockwork villains. All in all, pick your quilty poison, guys! If it’s sneaky, action-packed, or just plain weird…the pick is yours!;) Have a blast exploring!

FINISHING WORDS!

What IS the resemblance between the Plague doctor and a Robocop then? Hard to come up with something, aight? Both have their roots in imagining alternate worlds, but they couldn’t be MORE different in their vibe, aesthetic, and total worldview! One is all about brass and steam-powered contraptions…the other thrives in a neon-lit, high-tech dystopia!

So, if you’ve ever wondered or thought about pursuing one of these beloved lifestyles, you might need to figure out whether you consider yourself a Victorian engineer or a full-on hacker!;) And there’s always spare room to give it another ultimate twist like their predecessors did once…Try to mix it up maybe and bring it to a completely next level!

Although…that’ll either impress the world or confuse them into silence, which is a win either way!;)
